My fascination with Michelle Yeoh started when I watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon the second time. I admired her spunk and determination. She's one lady who can do a lot of action yet still doesn't lose her poise. How I wish I could be like her. I first watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon when a friend of mine gave me intriguing reviews of the movie. She told me the film was superb, the music was grand, the action was extraordinary, the cast were wonderful, the cinematography was excellent, etc, etc, etc. "Ok, ok," I said. "I'll rent the video!" (She wouldn't stop until I gave in. It was already out in video stores when I learned about the movie. That was the year 2001. I also rented the film Charlie's Angels not knowing that the part of Lucy Liu was once considered to be offered to Michelle. Now, how I wish she could have accepted, though she'd look tougher and more of a leader than the two bimbos.) So I rent the video and watched it with my family. It was one of the best, really! (For my amateur movie review, please go to MY Favorite Movies.) But Michelle Yeoh was not my favorite actress yet. I just pinned her as interesting, then. After watching Crouching Tiger, I became interested again in Hong Kong movies (I loved watching them when I was younger because my dad loved Hong Kong action, especially the comedy films. I didn't care about the subtitles, as long as it was funny, it was worth watching ). I constantly scouted cable guides for interesting movie titles and I put them in my schedule. It didn't matter if I didn't know the actors on those movies but I do look for those which have some personalities that I've seen before and even those who were just familiar. Some Hong Kong movie stars that I liked were Jackie Chan and Jet Li (of course, who wouldn't know their names), Maggie Cheung, Rosamund Kwan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Jackie Cheung, etc. I didn't know Michelle Yeoh then. Then I came across Police Story III: Supercop. I said, the actress there opposite Jackie Chan was practically crazy, especially when I saw the outtakes, but if she were a real cop, I'd salute her. The movie was very entertaining. (Please go to MY Favorite Movies for another amateur review.) Michelle was really different. She wasn't the type who would be the damsel in distress. She striked me as the girl who would rescue the boy. She was so independent, further proof were the movies of her that I later watched. I chanced upon Butterfly and Sword in Star Mandarin, again in cable tv. I noticed the movie because the prince in the film was handsome, then I saw Michelle, that piqued my interest. The movie was fine but I didn't like the ending. She jumped on the cliff to her death because the person she loved, loved somebody else. Alas, even though she was tough, she was still marshmallow hearted, and very sentimental. But I already like her. But I loved her when I saw the film "The Touch". I wanted to be Yin. She's feisty yet soft, brave but also emotional, independent but very loving and understanding. A protector. She protected the men in her life. Her father, her brother and Eric. (For my full review of The Touch, please go to MY Favorite movies.) The thing that I really liked about the movie was how she became the head of the family, the rescuer and the hero. Girl Power indeed! I can't wait for her other movies to come. Most of all, I'm definitely excited to see the prequel of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I'm sure it will live up to the people's expectation. I know that Michelle is one fine and responsible actress, and that made her MY Favorite.
